Lexy was YG Entertainment’s first solo female artist. She debuted in 2003 with her first album, Lexury. However, she had been rapping for a while, starting in 1998 on Lee Hyun Woo’s fifth album, and then in 1999 with YG Family. She won the 2003 SBS Gayo Daejeon New Artist award and the 2003 MBC New Artist award.
Even though she studied in the US for a year, she reportedly doesn’t speak English fluently.
Her second album, Lextacy, was a change in direction, going toward a more feminine and sexy approach – especially the title song she promoted, Noonmoolsshitgo Hwajanghago. Lexy obviously didn’t enjoy performing in revealing outfits and singing more than rapping, and after a few performances, she asked Yang Hyun Suk to stop the promotion of her second album and start working on the third. Hyun Suk agreed, and she went to work on Rush. In the meantime, her contract with YG expired in October of 2006. She chose not to renew it, but she and Hyun Suk agreed that they should finish her album before she left the company. Rush was completed a year later, in 2007.
After the promotion was over, Hyun Suk announced that Lexy was leaving YG Entertainment and explained the contract situation. Despite Lexy signing a contract with SB&W Entertainment, (a subsidiary of Sony BMG and Wider Than, run by Korean music site Melon), Hyun Suk said he thought of her as a younger sister who was getting married, more than as an artist leaving his company. He also expressed his regrets for her second album and for not being able to do more for her.
Her first album with SB&W Entertainment was released in March 2008.
